Dave Platt Me109 Bf109 Part 1

Image
The 1/5 scale Dave Platt Me-109 was a game changer. A model of this type arrived at our local in 1980 and it seemed huge compared to the 60 size warbirds were were flying. This 109 was powered by a OS 90 glow engine. The plans are not sold separately though one can find used copies or a pdf on the web. Belair Kit Cutters in the UK handle the Dave Platt line of short kits. The plans feature all wood construction. There are many build threads on the web, gas, glow and electric powered, just google Dave Platt ME109. Flying qualities are said to be good.

Dave Platt Plans

Dave Platt had five 1/5 scale warbird plans that were very popular. His A6M3 Zero (RCM May 1984)&nbsp; and FW190 (RCM May 1986) were featured construction articles in RCM magazine. Platt's Me109 was among the first to lead the trend to one fifth scale warbirds, followed by his Spitfire. Platt's T-28 was an enlargement of his original 60 size T28.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSisBDvJNMdP25aW0oaDwxSk5HgJckBiHVpyuJe5FY921GKeJAOsfcLg0pHm0ahQ0qfzEw9u1MzFS877kkWXEVe9aQYQtB7muo18-XyI4Dm9Ir4sKg7TiLUC1euv285TR5O9oiskMVIew/s1600/dave-platt-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="150" data-original-width="500" height="96" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSisBDvJNMd

So Many Warbird Kits and Projects

Image
I have my stash of r/c warbird projects that I hope to build, a Brian Taylor Spitfire short kit, plans for the Vito Tomeo Hawker Tempest, another Top Flite P-51 arc, a Top Flite P-47 crashed airframe that needs major repairs and more, the list goes on and new r/c warbird projects get acquired each year. However nothing beats the list of warbird kits and projects that Philip Avonds has collected and shows on his website page.  A few screen shots off his web site, check it out here .

Brian Taylor Warbird Plans

Image
The Brian Taylor Warbird plans are now available again on retail. Probably one of the best know warbird plan designers, Brian Taylor used to sell his own plans in the UK or through Bob Hollman in the USA. Brain Taylor then sold the plans rights to Traplet Publications. Traplet Publications went into receivership in 2017 and it appears that Sarik Hobbies are now selling the plans, short kits, accessories that Traplet used to sell. Quite a few modellers got stung when Traplet went under when they places orders and did not receive the merchandise so in this day of online ordering be aware of your credit card policies on these type of transactions.

Scale RC Modeler Magazine SRC

Image
Scale R/C Modeler magazine is another USA based scale magazine that went kaput in the 2000's. SRC magazine had many good warbird plans and articles. There doesn't seem to be that many online posts of articles or plans from this magazine, a specific search for a certain article or plans that was in SRC may yield a hit. Good luck!

RCM MAGAZINE (Radio Control Modeler)

Image
RCM ( Radio Control Modeler) magazine was perhaps the most popular rc magazine while it was in business and offered many rc warbird plans, articles and reviews. RCM magagzine started in the 1960's and went out of business in 2005. For a while RCM was still selling their plans but that has stopped too. RCM was noted for their flashy magazine covers. Fortunately a few modelers have put plans and articles on the web, a thread in RC Groups has the majority of the plans in PDF format at this thread  RCM plans on RC Groups . I advise saving the plans and articles you are interested in to your USB drive as one never knows when these offering can disappear. This blog site offers some plan articles from RCM at  RCM Articles and Plan Series Blog  . A search for 190 brought up this plan article, save what articles you wish before these sites go off-line!

Hawker Tempest Vito Tomeo Plans Part 1

Image
I picked up the plans and parts for the Vito Tomeo Hawker Tempest in 2016. Obtaining the fiberglass cowl was a big bonus due to the unusal cowl shape the Tempest had. I'll start cutting out the wood parts in the winter of 2017 - 2018. The Vito Tomeo Hawker Tempest was featured in the April 1983 issue of Scale RC Modeler magazine. A google search yielded two builds of the Tomeo Hawker Tempest, one by Dennis Hartley in Ontario, who said the model flew good, see  Dennis Hartley's Vito Tomeo Hawker Tempest   and another build by Dr. Phil Poffenbarger is found at   Phil Poffenbarger Vito Tomeo Hawker Tempest though no flying report is found for  Poffenbarger's Tempest. The parts that were available at one time for the Tomeo Hawker Tempest.

Blog Purpose and Vito Tomeo

Image
The first post on my RC WARBIRD PLANS Blog. The purpose of this blog is to creat a nest for information on rc warbird plans - especially the older plans whose designer may have passed on or is no longer advertising his plans or active in rc. I need to share what I know so that it's on the web before I too become too old for rc scale warbirds. What a joy the internet is to us modellers - sharing warbird info with a few clicks of a mouse and key board. I tend to focus on the 1/5 scale though with todays technology any good warbird plan can be scanned and plotted the the scale or wingspan you choose. Vito Tomeo designed and built three warbirds in the 1/5 scale range, a Hawker Tempest, a Hawker Sea Fury and a Republic P-47. Mr. Tomeo passed away in 1996. I have his Hawker Sea Fury and Hawker Tempest plan. I would like to get his P-47 plan. An ad from Scale RC Modeler magazine showing an ad for Tomeo plans. Vito Tomeo with is Sea Fury.
